Fun Underwear Run for Rare Diseases

For anyone who happened to be passing through Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, on the 10th February 2024, their eyes may have been surprised to see a group of adults running through the city in nothing but their underwear.

Fortunately it’s not some new trend sweeping TikTok, instead it was the annual fun run that’s held to raise funds to combat neurofibromatosis (N.F.), a group of rare diseases that causes tumors to form anywhere in the nervous system.

The decision to don underwear for the run was made to represent the fact that N.F. patients are unable to hide their tumors, as though they’re bearing all. The very first to have taken place is thought to be the Undie Runs started by UCLA student Eric Whitehead, in the fall of 2001.

The 2024 run followed a 1.2km route that started at Cypress in downtown Reno, where the group of dozens of runners gathered cross the city in their underwear. A husband and wife in charge of the event, who have a son diagnosed with NF when he was just 6, says the run has raised tens of thousands of dollars for research, and it’s being done in the most fun, and awesome way.

The condition is rare. It causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. It affects one out of every 2,000 people, which is about four million people a year. The couple tells us they’ve raised tens of thousands of dollars for research, and they did it in an awesome way.

What Is Neurofibromatosis N.F.?

There are three types of N.F., these include: neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) and schwannomatosis. It occurs in just 2000-3000 births annually. NF1 is typically more prominent in children, with the average age of onset being before the 10th birthday, whereas NF2 may not become apparent until early adulthood.

“We are a fundraising program of the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF), a 4-star rated charity, and the world’s leader in NF research. Since our start in 2010, our support has helped CTF generate 116 preclinical studies which have led to 16 clinical trials. One of those trials resulted in more than 70% of participants seeing their tumors shrink by 20 to 50%.” [Cupids.org]

If this like your thing, or perhaps it’s far from your thing but you’re willing to accept the challenge to raise money, awareness and support for the fight against N.F. then head on over to the Cupids.org site and sign up for the 2025 Undies Run to join the fight to #EndNF. The site provides all the necessary information and the sign-up feature for those who’d like to sign up, it also has a donate buttons where you can show your support safe in the knowledge your donation will do directly to aiding the cause.
