Hydrogen Water

Contrary to popular belief, the pH of your blood cannot be changed by drinking alkaline water. However, consuming hydrogen water has shown numerous benefits, including improved nutrient absorption and aid in breaking down enzymes. It’s common knowledge that water contains oxygen and hydrogen. In its current state the body cannot absorb the hydrogen in water, however some experts and companies believe that when the molecule is added to water it mixes in a ‘loose’ form that can in fact be processed.

Adding hydrogen to the water is believed to increase anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This can help boost energy levels, slow signs of aging and improve recovery.

Although current research into the health benefits of hydrogen water is limited, the number of anecdotal evidence has at least grown to the point where more official neutral studies are being conducted. With a little luck, at some point in the future we could see hydrogen water becoming a staple part of any health and/or recovery diet.

Hydrogen water is available in pre-mixed bottles; in which hydrogen gas is added to the water much like carbonated drinks. It can also be purchased in dissolvable tablets that can be mixed with regular water.

Showing much promise is great, but since the science on this is still out, it’s highly advise that you perform safe self-experimentation using small to moderate amounts, and where possible, conduct third-party tests to better validate claims and ensure the desired physiological responses.

Benefits of Hydrogen Water

Despite the need for more research into the findings, many agree that hydrogenated water offers a number of great health benefits. Some of these benefits include:

Reduce Side Effects from Radiation Therapy: One study of 49 people suffering from liver cancer showed that drinking hydrogen water for six weeks reduced the side effects of radiation therapy and improved quality of life.

Improve Athletic Performance: A study of 10 soccer players reported that drinking hydrogen water reduced muscle fatigue and slowed down muscle function decline as a result of exercise.

Disease Prevention: preliminary studies also suggest hydrogen water contains antioxidants and may have anti-inflammatory properties. This may help reduce the risk of some life-threatening conditions, such as heart disease.

Hydrogen Water Potential Risks

Fortunately, there appear to be no side effects from drinking hydrogen water. However, it is important to remember that even drinking enough regular water can cause serious health problems; it can cause hyponatremia, where the kidneys can’t process the water sufficiently, and sodium content in the blood gets diluted. Hyponatremia is life-threatening.

So, it’s important to remember that consuming any liquid for hydration must be done in moderation. It’s quite a coincidence that our main lifeline is poisonous in large amounts. It’s also important to choose reliable sources for hydrogen water and other types of water. Not all hydrogenated water is made equal, just like bottled water, so be sure to choose reputable brands you know and trust.
